Natural pool builders Portugal — Aqua Vitae

Portugal has become one of the best places in the world to build a natural swimming pool — ideal climate, excellent local stone, skilled labour and a growing number of experienced builders. But not all builders are equal, and choosing the wrong one is an expensive mistake.

This guide will help you identify a qualified, experienced natural pool builder in Portugal — and avoid the common mistakes that lead to green water, structural failures and systems that don't work.

What to look for in a natural pool builder

Completed projects you can verify

Any reputable natural pool builder will have a portfolio of completed, named projects — with photographs that show the pool in its finished state, ideally with plants established and water clear. Ask to speak with past clients. Ask for the address of a completed project you can visit.

Be wary of builders who show only renders, design concepts or stock photography. Natural pools are genuinely difficult to build well — the proof is in built, functioning systems, not illustrations.

Specific natural pool experience

Building a natural pool is fundamentally different from building a conventional pool. It requires understanding of aquatic biology, hydraulic engineering, filtration system design and ecological balance — in addition to standard pool construction. A conventional pool builder who "also does natural pools" is a very different proposition from a specialist who has done nothing else.

Ask specifically: how many natural pools have you completed? What is the oldest one you've built, and how is it performing? What went wrong on projects and how did you fix it?

Filtration system knowledge

A natural pool builder should be able to clearly explain the filtration approach they're recommending for your specific site — planted zone, compact biofilter, or hybrid — and why. They should be able to specify the exact equipment they use (pump brands, UV steriliser types, filter media) and explain the hydraulic sizing rationale.

If they can't explain clearly how the water will be kept clean, they don't understand the system they're building.

Construction method transparency

Ask exactly how the pool shell will be constructed and waterproofed. Liner type (EPDM? reinforced PVC?), warranty, installation method. Concrete or liner? Why? The best builders use well-established construction systems with documented performance histories and material warranties.

A correctly constructed natural pool uses reinforced concrete or a high-quality liner system — not loose stone and hope. Ask your builder to explain their construction method in detail.

Credentials and recognition

Industry recognition is not the only measure of quality, but it is a useful signal. Look for builders who have completed projects that have been recognised by independent bodies — award wins, published case studies, endorsements from equipment manufacturers as certified installers.

Aqua Vitae is the winner of the 2025 International Water Artisan of the Year Award — one of three projects selected globally from entries across multiple countries. We are certified installers for Firestone Elevate EPDM liners, AquaForte filtration systems and Blue Lagoon UV sterilisers.

Questions to ask any natural pool builder

  • How many natural pools have you completed in Portugal?
  • Can I visit or speak with the owner of a completed project?
  • What filtration system do you recommend for my site, and why?
  • What liner or waterproofing system do you use, and what is its warranty?
  • How long does the biological system take to establish?
  • What happens if the water turns green — how do you diagnose and fix it?
  • Do you provide an aftercare service or maintenance support?
  • What equipment brands do you work with, and are you a certified installer?
  • What is included in the quote — design, permits, landscaping?
  • What is your construction timeline, and what does your contract cover?

Red flags to watch for

🚩 Warning signs

No completed projects to show. Only renders and CGI images. Cannot explain the filtration system clearly. Significantly lower price than all other quotes. No specific liner warranty. No mention of hydraulic sizing. "We can do natural pools — we do all kinds of pools." No after-sales or maintenance support offered.

✓ Good signs

Multiple completed projects with named references. Clear filtration explanation. Certified installer for named brands. Construction method explained with materials and warranties. Willing to answer all technical questions. After-care service available. Price in the expected range for the scope.

Why Portugal is ideal for natural pools

Portugal offers some of the best conditions for natural pool construction and performance anywhere in the world:

  • Climate — the Portuguese climate supports natural pool biology year-round. Long warm summers with plenty of sunlight support aquatic plant growth and biological activity.
  • Local stone — Portugal has exceptional local limestone and granite that is ideal for natural pool construction — beautiful, durable, and native to the landscape.
  • Labour costs — skilled construction labour in Portugal is significantly less expensive than Northern Europe, California or the Gulf — making high-quality natural pools more accessible.
  • Growing expertise — Portugal now has a growing community of experienced natural pool builders, with the most complex and innovative projects in the country recognised internationally.
